Oscar Day in Los Angeles

The city here is alive today because it’s Oscar Day. The only comparison I know how to make for those of you in other areas of the country is this: It is like Knoxville on the day of the Tennessee / Florida game. Except there is none of that orange and white. It’s Prada, Armani, and Oscar de la Renta. It may seem a bit pretentious that people in the industry all think the world turns around them — but on this day, 1 billion people do watch. That’s pretty amazing. As a person with a passion for film myself, it’s one of my favorite days of the year. I’m going to an Oscar party with some friends, and it should be lots of fun.

Here are my predictions — not who I think should win (that was back in January), but who I think will win:

Best Actor in a Leading: Forrest Whitaker. Runner up: Leonardo Di Caprio.
Best Actress in a Leading: Helen Mirren. Runner up: Merryl Streep
Best Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls. Runner up: Djimon Honsou
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson. Runner up: Cate Blanchett
Animated: Happy Feet
Art Direction: Pan’s Labrynth
Cinematography: Pan’s Labrynth
Documentary: An Inconvenient Truth (hats off to my former boss)
Film editing: United 93
Best Picture: The Departed (finally one for Martin Scorcese) Runner up: Iwo Jima

It promises to be a fun night. Off to the party — sans Prada.
