Today was one of those days when I felt so blessed to live in Southern California. This is the first year in three years that we have had sufficient rains to make the hills green in the winter months, and as I drove over the mountains of Kanan Dune Road toward the Pacific I was reminded of why I loved being here in the first place. The hills around Malibu and up the 101 freeway look like Irish hills at this time of the year, and there is something about the light shining on the hills and breaking across the water that just makes me feel a deep sense of happiness and calm. As I drove to school, I found myself over and over again looking at the incredible landscape and the views toward the ocean saying, “Wow! How did I ever deserve this?” It was one of those days where I cannot believe that I get to live in such a beautiful place.

I was on my way to breakfast with one of my former students at Paradise Cove who is just a pure joy to know — he defines cool, he’s smart, and he’s got a great future ahead of him. We sat ON THE BEACH having coffee and eggs, and looking at the ocean scape above … then joined two of my entertainment friends at a beach house for a discussion about our work at Pepperdine, and then went to teach class about free expression.

I am grateful for paradise. It’s not perfect, but I can’t imagine anything better.
