Bootcamp Health Tips: Rules for a Six Pack

My trainer Bernardo passed along a few tips for improving metabolism and developing a leaner body that I thought were useful, so I am passing them along to you. Here are the rules for creating a six pack (or some best case scenario):

1. Wake up to water. Drink at least 16 oz of chilled water as soon as you rise in the morning. It boosts metabolism by 24 percent for 90 minutes. Guzzle at least one gallon of water per day.

2. Eat breakfast every day. Men who skip their morning meal are four and a half times more likely to have bulging bellies than those who don’t skip breakfast. One suggestion: Instant oatmeal with a scoop of whey protein powder and 1/2 cup of blueberries.

3. Pack your lunch, don’t eat out. What to eat? An apple or fruit for morning snack, two slices of fat free cheese with the apple, a 500 to 600 calorie lunch, and a premixed protein shake for the afternoon. Always eat six times per day.

4. Spend as much time weight lifting as in doing cardio. The best way to enhance weight loss is a one-two approach of weight lifting and high intensity interval training. Half an hour of pumping iron burns as many calories as running at a six minute mile for the same duration. Lifting boosts metabolism for as long as 39 hours after the last lift.

5. Get your sleep. Lack of sleep can disrupt the hormones needed to burn fat. Muscle resistance to insulin can lead to fat storage around the belly. Get 7-8 hours of sleep for optimal weight loss.

Good luck!

Todd, Thanks for the tips! I can definitely stand to profit from your trainer’s advice, since I presently tend to disregard every single one of his points! Regards, David A.
