Todd’s 2009 Oscar Predictions

It was a 4 star year at the movies. Other than “Dark Knight”, there were no 5 star films this year. But there were a lot of 4 stars, and for that we lovers of film should be grateful. My favorite film of the year, if I had to pick, was “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, my least favorite was “Seven Pounds” (which I hate to admit because it was written by my friend), and my favorite performances were Sean Penn in “Milk”, Brad Pitt in “Benjamin Button”, Anne Hathaway in “Rachel Getting Married”, and Melissa Leo in “Frozen River”. Heath Ledger deserves honor in a category all hiw own for his portrayal of “the Joker” in “The Dark Knight”. Most deserving films not nominated: “Grand Torino” and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”. Most nominated, and not deserving: “Slumdog Millionaire” (sorry people, but it’s a predictable story that is getting so many accolades because we feel good about ourselves for being so multicultural that we like films about India, but I’d rather just go have some curry; it’s good, but not that good).

It’s Oscar time here in Hollywood, and I can feel it in the air. It’s the most exciting day of the year in Los Angeles, and I can’t wait to see the glamorous arrivals and the evening’s surprises. Here are my predictions:

Actor in a Leading Role: Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler”
Actor in a Supporting Role: Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”
Actress in a Leading Role: Kate Winslet, “The Reader”
Actress in a Supporting Role: Taraji P. Henson, “Benjamin Button”
Animated Feature Film: “Wall-E”
Art Direction: “Benjamin Button”
Cinematography: “Benjamin Button”
Directing: Ron Howard, “Frost Nixon”
Documentary Feature: “Trouble the Water”
Film editing: “The Dark Knight”
Film Score: “Slumdog Millionaire:
Best Picture: “Slumdog Millionaire”
Writing (adapted): “Doubt”
Writing (original): “Milk”
