The Leadership Lessons of Lincoln

lincoln_1The New York Times today features an article by Nancy Koehn of Harvard Business School on the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln. As discussed in the article, Lincoln:

  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence by delaying or resisting communications at a time when his emotions could have been non-productive to long-term goals
  • Kept focused on the big picture while making compromises to achieve larger purposes
  • Sought the counsel of those who differed with his own opinions
  • Insisted on symbolic victories to make cultural advances that others saw as wrong in the short-term
  • Was resilient in setbacks and failures
